I'LL CARRY WATER FOR YOU
Recently I had a conversation with a colleague who was
offering to assist me with a project. In the midst of our interaction he
looked me directly in the eyes and said, “That’s not yours to worry
about – I will carry water for you.”
As you might imagine I was blown away by my friend’s level of support. I
immediately felt both humbled and elated at the level of his
encouragement and endorsement.
Shortly after this exchange, I wondered with whom or in what setting
might I make such a profound statement. What situation or scenario would
evoke my willingness to not only get behind somebody or something but
get in front of them as well?
I also reflected on how my colleague had demonstrated such a strong
sense of Christ’s loving presence to me. I kept hearing Jesus’ words, “I
did not come to be served but to serve.”
Like carrying water, serving others is no small task. It takes focus,
determination endurance and most significantly it takes self-sacrifice.
Any one of these on it’s own merit is challenging but the combination
can be almost overwhelming.
Yet, it is in our willingness to “carry water” for others we are not
only showing Christ but allowing Christ to shine though us.
Blessings,

The Rev. Brian N. Prior, Rector
