GENERAL CONVENTION
It all started when I was in my early twenties. I was
working for the diocese, running Camp Cross and doing Youth Ministry.
Because of this work I was invited to attend the largest legislative
gathering in the world – General Convention.
To say it was an eye opening experience does not even begin to describe
all that I encountered. The sure size is impressive enough, as in there
are times when over 10,000 folks will be in attendance at one time. Then
there is the diversity of God’s children. Every size, shape, race,
language and political persuasion and agenda is in attendance.
What was missing on my first adventure and why I had been asked to be a
part of it was a significant lack of young people. In essence my agenda
was to advocate for greater access for young people in the life and
governance of the Church.
Through the years I have been blessed to be a part of making the desire
of full inclusion of young folks in our Church a greater reality. 18
youth from around the country are now given seat and voice on the floor
of convention. In addition, many dioceses have elected younger deputies
to convention. And, more young people now attend for the experience and
to speak at legislative hearings on issues that our important to them.
During my sojourn I have served as a youth advisor, deputy, chaplain,
committee chair and presently as the Vice President. Each step of the
way I have tried diligently to maintain my core value of advocating for
young people in our Church.
Yet, there is one other group that a number of years ago I began
advocating for – YOU! I now carry with me in every conversation, debate
and piece of legislation – YOU. How does this impact the people of ECOR?
What is in the best interest of our faith community? How will this help
us grow into the people God is calling us to be?
Please continue to pray for your General Convention. And please be
assured that you remain not only in my prayers but in my thoughts and
deliberations.
Blessings,

The Rev. Brian N. Prior, Rector
