A GOOD TWEAKING
I waited with great anticipation for last Saturday to
arrive. As many of you know I love to ride my bike. It is a life-long
passion. As long as I can remember I have ridden a bike. Even when I
received my driver’s license and purchased a car, I still rode my bike.
Stingray with chopper forks on the front, wheelie bar on the back and a
big banana seat was the bike of choice for me as a little kid. Then I
saved, saved, saved and bought my first Schwinn ten-speed. This was
followed by a mountain bike and then finally the finely tuned, ultra
light-weight road bike. See, I told you I was passionate about riding
bikes.
When my fellow cyclist friend, and our previous Senior Warden, Steve
Allen invited me to be the guinea pig for an expert bike fit I jumped on
(pun intended) the opportunity. With my bike mounted on a trainer
(that’s an apparatus to hold your bike while still allowing you to
peddle), surrounded by a cadre of physical therapists and two
world-class experts in fitting bicycles every micro inch of my bike was
analyzed in relationship to my body.
There were laser lights, a variety of measurement tools and a white
board to do what appeared to be bike – body algebra. I would pedal, the
experts would analyze, discuss and then tweak my bike often in the most
infinitesimal manner. The results, however, were huge. I have never felt
more connected to my bike. Specifically, both my bike and my body were
at a harmonious peek.
This amazing cycling transformation has caused me to ponder what else in
my life would benefit from some “tweaking?” If a minor adjustment to my
seat or handlebars or pedals has made riding both more comfortable and
more efficient, what could similar modifications do in other arenas for
my soul?
Praying at different times, using different prayers, praying with
others, reading scripture with a group of folks, using other
commentaries – all of these and so many others in a tweaking manner
could potentially provide a transforming experience in our faith
journey.
Big changes were not necessary to increase the quality of my cycling
experience. I believe the same is true in our faith journey. Just a
little tweaking could potentially do amazing things.
Blessings,

The Rev. Brian N. Prior, Rector
